Positions at the Polls

Judge of Election

The Judge of Election is the Election Board team leader responsible for:

  • Overseeing all other Election Personnel and Operations inside of the polling location.
  • Enforcing Election Day rules and regulations
  • Return election supplies and results to the Courthouse.

Inspectors and Clerks of Election

The Inspectors and Clerks of Election will:

  • Assist the Judge of Election and share responsibility for the operation of the polling site
  • Process voters, manage poll books, and distribute ballots.
  • After the polls close, all Election Officers assist the Judge of Election in closing the polling site.

Machine Operator

  • Handles the opening and closing of the voting machines
  • Activates the machine for voters to cast their ballots
  • Assists voters when necessary.

After the polls close, all Election Officers assist the Judge of Election in closing the polling site.

Poll Worker Requirements

Poll Workers must be comfortable with interacting with the public, and keeping up to date with election changes. Poll Workers assist voters and maintain election procedures. They are vital to an efficient and honest Election. All positions are compensated. 

To become a Poll Worker: 

  • You must be registered to vote in Erie County
  • Physically capable of sitting and/or standing for long periods, hearing voters, and writing information.
  • Arrive at the Poll at 6:30am and remain until work is complete (close at 8pm).
  • You must attend a three hour, paid training session.
  • Remain apolitical to ensure all voters feel welcome while casting their vote.
